Scientists have for some years been able to ‘teleport’ quantum states from one place...

Scientists have for some years been able to ‘teleport’ quantum states from one place to another. Now Seth Lloyd and his MIT team say that, using the same principles and a further strange quantum effect known as ‘postselection’, it should be possible to do the same backwards in time. Lloyd told the Technology Review: “It is possible for particles (and, in principle, people) to tunnel from the future to the past.”

And that brings up a few points (and — don’t forget/as always — I’m nothing more than an enthusiastic amateur with this):

1. Can we make quantum mechanics nonlinear?
2. How does postselection get around the idea of twisting space and time?
3. The website on which the original paper appeared is not peer-reviewed. It calls on the Energy Department to create a national plan for deploying electric vehicles. It allows electricity to count as an alternative vehicle fuel. It provides grants to local communities that set up their own plug-in networks. It also calls for a whole flurry of studies on things like identifying the raw materials needed for plug-in technology (no doubt with an eye on China’s announcement that it will cut exports for rare-earth metals like lithium, which are crucial for batteries). All told, there’s only $400 million in the bill for electrification, compared with $6 billion in tax incentives for the purchase of natural-gas vehicles. Still, it’s a start.”

— via.

yama-bato:

Harry Pearce has to ride to work on a unicycle.

All accents north of Manchester now require a licensing fee.

Inspector Morse only allowed to use dots. Dashes are currently pending.

Liverpool can only play “Semi-Real Madrid.” The rest of the team must be imaginary.

Quango quango quango quango quango quango.

Outsourcing: anyone dialing 999 will reach 911 services here in the U.S.; anyone dialing 911 in the U.S. will reach Emergency Services in the U.K. Breaking and entering calls now have an estimated response time of a week and a half, depending on whether or not their flight is delayed.

Quango quango quango quango.

In a meeting with several reporters this afternoon, House Minority Leader John Boehner outlined the top three measures he’d pursue if he becomes Speaker of the House next Congress to create new jobs. But, those who thought he’d outline specific programs and how they would create jobs were disappointed with a familiar litany of wish-list items: repeal health care reform, eschew climate legislation, and renew the Bush tax cuts.

In other words, repeal a program that largely hasn’t yet taken effect; prevent new legislation that is also not in effect; and keep a current tax structure in place. Step four: profit. Or jobs.
